We chose Blue Cross insurance for our cruise around the world. During the trip, we required medical attention on board. On a ship where you spend four months with travelers from all over the world, it is normal to be exposed to different germs and to get sick.
To reduce costs, we opted for a package with a deductible of $3,000 CAD per incident. The aim was to protect us in the event of a major problem – for example hospitalization, medical evacuation or repatriation.
In total, we spent about $1,000 CAD on medical care during those four months, which we paid for out of pocket. However, in the event of a serious complication, insurance would have been essential to support us financially.
Do not underestimate the risk of accidents or even death at sea. Many travelers are injured while exploring difficult-to-access places or simply by missing a step. We have seen serious injuries: torn Achilles tendon, broken ankle, dislocated or broken shoulders, etc.
Medical evacuations at sea are extremely expensive and can run into tens of thousands of dollars. During our cruise, 9 people unfortunately died. Friends who traveled the previous year reported 22.
Having adequate travel insurance is not an option: it is essential to protect yourself from medical and financial risks.
